New England Stone, Inc. is proud to announce that we provided Premium Imported Calacatta Gold White Italian Marble for the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s Third Place national winner for its 2010 Design Competition – Small Kitchens Category. The award was presented to Covenant Kitchens & Bath, Inc. of Westbrook, Connecticut.

“Open only to NKBA members, the NKBA Design Competition recognizes excellence in the field of design in ten categories covering kitchens, bathrooms, and other rooms, including home offices and showroom displays. Award winners receive cash prizes as well as increased industry visibility, peer recognition, and valuable publicity opportunities.” © 2010, National Kitchen and Bath Association – www.nkba.org. The 2010 Design Competition winners were chosen by a panel of expert judges who consider everything from taste, design ingenuity, practicality, uniqueness, quality, and aesthetic appeal.

The NKBA had the following to say regarding its Third Place winner:

“Silk, marble, and crystal are the elegant materials used to adorn this petite kitchen. Frosty white raised panel cabinetry with crystal knobs sit above and below a Turkish marble subway tile backsplash. This well-dressed kitchen was neatly incorporated into the space of an 1800’s Federal style home. Jacobean dark stained flooring and taupe silk wall covering draw out the colored veins and shading in the marble. Limited space requires maximum efficiency in the usability of this hard-working stylish space. An adjoining laundry room offers additional storage with the continuity of white cabinetry, along with insets incorporated for a microwave and electric crisper. This quaint riverside home maintains the clean lines of its heritage with a seamlessly blended, contemporary classic kitchen.” Soure: © 2010, National Kitchen and Bath Association – www.nkba.org.

For New England Stone, this project had four essential components: first, the raised countertop situated above the barrier wall between the kitchen and dining room; second, the L-shaped countertop including the kitchen sink; third, the straight countertop including the stove; fourth, the pantry countertop.

By using consecutively fabricated slabs, each of the four main pieces is uniform in both color and movement; the dark, rich veining is consistent across the four pieces. There is also a perfect balance between the white background and the stark veining. The slabs were also large enough that each of the four pieces was fabricated without any seaming whatsoever.

Both the client and Covenant Kitchens opted for a simple edge detail and a half-inch rear rail border as design elements. The simple pencil edge preserves the rich, thick feel of the marble, allowing the beauty and movement of the material to be highlighted free and clear of a stark, gaudy edge profile. The rear rail border also provides a more ornate, yet simple transition to the subway tile backsplash.

The end-result is a practical, beautiful kitchen worthy of a national award. We’re pleased to have worked with both Covenant Kitchens and the client on this project.
